Myth or Fact? Silicone Scar Sheets Edition
Can these low-cost, over-the-counter sheets really replace Botox?
I’m excited to be launching my new series, Myth or Fact?, where I uncover whether the latest trending products and aesthetic hacks actually do what people claim…
Silicone Scar Sheets... can they really replace Botox?
You may have seen the latest craze of going to bed with a face covered in strategically placed silicone scar tape. Many claim this not only traps in moisture, keeping the skin plump and hydrated, but it can also treat mild to moderate wrinkles and prevent new ones from forming.
According to the trend, with overnight use, the $20 or less tape can completely change the surface of your skin, eliminating the need for expensive Botox treatments.
Sounds too good to be true, right? Unfortunately for your wallet and your fear of needles, it is.
This one is a myth.
I even gave it a go myself and can confirm that while scar sheets can keep skin hydrated and treat scars (as it’s intended to do), there just is no active ingredient present that can effectively treat wrinkles.
The good news? You will absolutely get a short-term result that lasts, at most, a few hours. So, at the very least, you have an excellent option for when you want to slightly change your appearance before an important event.
Botox and Dysport are still the standard for the complete treatment of wrinkles. However, for managing signs of aging, regular use of retinol is also highly recommended — and pain-free!
I’d be happy to provide some retinol recommendations from the brands I trust most: — Image, GlyMed+, or Circadia — or answer any questions on aesthetic treatments for pesky wrinkles and signs of aging here.
